Day 73: Lyell Fork - Tuolumne Meadows (mi 932-942)

Minus One hikes out to Tuolumne Meadows.

We woke up early, with a rapid camp break and all were hiking by 7. Minus One hiked well,  and it was great to get going early and beat the mosquitoes. Minus One complimented Smiles' hiking & determination & abilities. It became increasingly busy and crowded on the trail as we hiked the mellow beautiful Lyell fork of the Tuolumne river valley. We arrived at the general store after an easy 10-12 miles on the day, and were at the tioga pass road just before noon. We consumed the compulsory ice cream and beer with assorted hiker trash, including Grande Burrito and Guy on a Buffalo. Minus One drove us to the valley to rendezvous with my mom @ 1, and it was around 108 degrees in Yosemite Valley, a full 30-40 degrees hotter than the alpine climates we were experiencing. Not expected.  The room we had at the Yosemite Lodge was unbearably hot, and after we found that there was no alternative, we lounged by the pool until it was time for dinner at the Awahnee Hotel. The dinner was fantastic, and I ate salad, steak and a huge dessert to the point of gorging myself. We had my parents bring several bottles of Ridge Vineyards zinfandel to accompany dinner. After several months without decent wine, it was most refreshing to realize that our palettes weren't completely shot. We went back to the sweltering room and tried to catch up on blogs until it was cool enough to sleep, which was some time around 1 AM.
